an acknowledgment by the Japanese Government of the friendly treatment which some Japanese Seamen, (originally 35 in number) had met with at the hands of this Government. These men had been rescued by a Chinese Junk from their vessel when foundering near the Pratas Shoal.

They arrived here on the 30th January, and I directed payment to the Chinese, who brought them, of $100 - being a moiety of the sum they claimed, but, under the circumstances, sufficient, as the Junk which rescued them was actually bound to Hong Kong.
4. Dengages engaged passage for these men afterwards in a Steamer the "Corea" - bound for Japan.
The "Corea" however was unfortunate - wrecked on the way, and the men returned here. I was enabled soon afterwards to ship them by the Clipper Ship "Arich", and they all arrived safely - except one lost in the wreck of the "Corea".
5. Your Lordship will observe that Sir Harry Parkes has only thought it expedient, and I think for very sufficient reason,
